Swedish roundels in reversed colours?!

Postby Jens on 23 Feb 2010 12:27

Check out this b/w photo http://web.telia.com/~u52220226/115J30-blank.jpg of a Swedish Mosquito. It sure dose seem to me that the colours on the roundel is reversed. Compare with this one http://web.telia.com/~u52220226/115J30-F1-D.jpg.

I am not at all expert in this area, but I have seen examples in which the qualities of the photographic film caused light and dark colors to be reversed in the print. On the other hand, it's certainly possible that Sweden used some sort of low-visibility national markings. as many other countries have.

Those are very interesting photos. I didn't know that the Swedish air force flew Mosquitos.

Best regards,

Hi Peter.

They didn't get them until after the war, where they also bought Spitfires and Mustangs.
Norway also bought Mosquito's and Spitfires.

I think you are rigth there Peter, this is most probably a case of the photo playing a trick with the colours.

As for the Swedish Spitfires it would be noted that these was used for Reconnaissance under the designation S-31 during the years 1948-54. The Mustangs was used as a Figther with the designation F-26 and for Reconnaissance with the designation S-26 during the years 1945-54. The Mosquitos with the designation J-30 was used during the years 1948-54 as a Nigth Figther. Source the Swedish Wikipedia.

Yeah, I also think that you Peter is right. As I've never seen the roundels is reversed colours before "and I've seen many pics of the Swedish planes". Yours explanation sounds correct and the most obvious one.
Cheers

In older black-and-white photography the photographic emulsion reacted weakly with blue light - so blue tended to look a pale tone.

You will see numerous examples from Edwardian times of Union Flags looking to have a pale background with darker cross and saltire. It wasn't a pale tone of blue - just poor reaction of the emulsion.

So with this Swedish plane - I guess it's still a blue background with yellow crowns.
